How do you get the black smelly guck out of your bathroom sink drain - we already tried drano?

Help, I am trying to clean my bathroom sink drain. Over time it appears there is some heavy buildup from all the stuff being washed down it. It stinks and it is black and stuck to the insides of the drain. My husband says we need to take the hose and spray it with a powerful spray gun. Is that really how to go about this? Any suggestions?
