What is wrong with her?

Yes it sounds like the mania is triggered by exhaustion or when she gets into a situation that is similar to one that has caused her trauma in the past (childhood)..it's one of the minds self defense mechanisms....once her mind feels itself slipping into those really dark,bad feelings..adrenaline kicks in automatically.
